Body Weight Set Point – Fact or Fallacy?

16 Nov 2023
Nutrition & Lifestyle Clinic

The concept of a "body weight set point" has long been a topic of debate within the field of obesity and weight management. The idea suggests that the body has a biologically determined weight range that it strives to maintain, and that efforts to significantly deviate from this range are met with physiological resistance.

To date, scientific research on the body weight set point has produced mixed results. While some studies have provided evidence of physiological mechanisms that defend against weight loss and weight gain, others have questioned the notion of a fixed set point and deny that these defence mechanisms provide evidence that one exists. Factors such as genetics, hormones, metabolism, and neural pathways are believed to play a role in regulating body weight, and research has demonstrated their influence on appetite, energy expenditure, and fat storage. The complex interplay between these factors (and others) makes the understand of mechanisms that control weight management a significant challenge.

Furthermore, individual variability in weight regulation is substantial, and the concept of a set point does not account for the diverse non-physiological factors that influence body weight, including cultural, psychological, and socioeconomic factors.

In conclusion, the idea of a body weight set point remains a complex and debated topic in the scientific community. While there is evidence to support the existence of regulatory mechanisms that influence body weight, the concept of a fixed set point is not universally accepted. Weight management is a multifaceted issue influenced by numerous factors, and any approach to addressing it should consider both the physiological and behavioural aspects in a personalised and holistic manner.
