Diabetes matters in the emergency department – a collaborative experience from Manchester on how to improve diabetes management at the front door
Emergency Departments across the country are experiencing unprecedented pressure with record-breaking waiting times due to increasing patient demand coupled with high hospital occupancy. Crowded EDs pose a threat to safe diabetes management and people living with diabetes are put in a vulnerable position whilst in the department. At Manchester Royal Infirmary, we have seen a rise in avoidable Diabetes harms associated with ED crowding. A collaborative cross-speciality solution was put in place with a focus on shared learning from patient safety incidents to improve diabetes front door management.
