Periwound maceration and diabetic foot ulcers/venous leg ulcers
Diabetic Foot Ulcers (DFUs) represent a major global health concern, affecting up to 25% of people with diabetes mellitus (DM). Periwound maceration in diabetic foot ulceration is a less-recognised factor that contributes to impaired or delayed wound healing.
This presentation addresses the challenges of periwound maceration in the healing of DFUs. Assessment and prevention strategies are of key importance in all types of MASD (Moisture-Associated Skin Damage), including in periwound maceration. Interventions to protect the skin include the use of skin protection products such as barrier creams, barrier films and ointments to create a protective layer on the skin surface that simultaneously maintain hydration levels while blocking external moisture
