The Diabetes Education App (Deapp)
Deapp, The Diabetes Education App, is the UK’s only diabetes education programme that combines digital videos, physical games and bespoke training for NHS diabetes teams.
The Deapp app is used by hospitals across the UK and helps to deliver complicated type 1 diabetes information to patients and their families at diagnosis in a way which is easier to understand and (most importantly) fun to engage with!
Deapp is a structured curriculum programme which was created and compiled by NHS diabetes staff, nutritionists, psychologists, patients, parents and other healthcare professionals.
Our goal for Deapp is to ensure the delivery of standardised information and education to all patients diagnosed at any NHS hospital. Using Deapp will help prevent the variations offered by teams currently.
Deapp, pronounced “deep”, (like the deep sea), contains over 50 animated bite size videos within the app which users can work through and sequentially unlock, this helps to present only the key information at the start and to stop users from being overwhelmed. Allowing progression at their own pace creates a sense of ownership of their own education whilst being rewarded with progression and unlocking new content via gamification.
Healthcare professionals can remotely track the progress of users including the amount of time the videos have been watched, ensuring that they can visit the patients and ask relevant questions without bringing up topics that haven't been explored yet.
The physical resources created by Deapp aid the education and conversation that healthcare professionals have with the patient. Using the flipped learning methodology with the video content delivering the initial learning, healthcare professionals can now use their time to reinforce and assess the knowledge and understanding of the information through discussion.
The Deapp educators deliver training to diabetes teams in other hospitals, focusing on how to use all of the resources and contents effectively with their patients and families.Training outcomes include use of age appropriate questioning skills, the theory and practice of Flipped Learning assessment techniques and the confidence and support to educate in a new way.
Deapp is brought to you by HEAL.med CIC, a not-for-profit social enterprise, supported by the NHS University Hospitals of Leicester, Leicester Children's diabetes team and the Leicester Children’s Research Team. Deapp/HEAL.med has won awards from the QiC, Medilink, Niche Business, Real Entrepreneurs and a Global Excellence Award from Global Health and Pharma 2023.
