An update from our partner - Leicester Diabetes Centre
The Leicester Diabetes Centre is renowned for its excellent education and research teams. Today, we shine a spotlight on two programmes offered by Eden, our esteemed healthcare professional education team.
MyEden Instagram Series:
Following on from our first series covering the nine care processes, we thought a New Year called for a new MyEden Instagram series. In February we launched our new series of ‘on the go’ education for busy healthcare professionals (HCPs). We have developed resources to help HCPs understand the importance the 24-hour physical health behaviours (aka the 5Ss) and how they can be incorporated into the lives of people with long-term conditions.
Every two weeks from the 5th of February 2024, from our Instagram account we are releasing FREE interactive resources covering each of the 5Ss – Sleep, Sitting, Stepping, Sweating and Strengthening. If you don’t already follow us please scan the QR code below or search for @edendiabetes.
24-Hour Physical Health Behaviours Pilot
In January 2024, in collaboration with the Leicester Lifestyle and Health Research Group (NIHR Leicester BRC), we delivered our first ever training to a group of physiotherapists and first contact practitioners on the 24-hour physical behaviours, also known as the 5Ss. Research at the Leicester Diabetes Centre (LDC) on sleep, sitting, stepping, sweating and strengthening has led to the 5Ss being an integral part of the American Diabetes Association (ADA) and European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD) Consensus Report (2022) on the Management of Hyperglycaemia in Type 2 Diabetes.
In a 24-hour day, we move in very different ways from minimal movement right through to high-intensity movement. The training focuses on understanding how and why the 5Ss can be incorporated into the lives of people not only living with type 2 diabetes but in people living with other long-term health conditions.
The attendees were involved in several interactive activities which included calculating walking pace and completing the ‘sit-to-stand’ functional test. We also made sure that every 30 minutes throughout the training everyone was encouraged to break their sitting time.
The Leicester Lifestyle and Health Research Group has developed patient-facing and healthcare professional resources to help understand and apply the 5Ss behaviours across the movement continuum.
